It’s been a hectic and challenging year so far, but high time for some updates.
BOARD: After a number of past directors left their roles in 2025, one of our key focuses was to fill vacant director positions. The 2026 AGM was held at Kingborough Sports Centre in May, where we welcomed Shiralee Maher to the board, and subsequently Triin Thorpe filled the final vacant position. Both these new directors bring enthusiasm and experience but from different perspectives and we look forward to working with them. The Board of Volleyball Tasmania now comprised as follows:
PLANNING: In July, member representatives from around the state gathered at Campbell Town to agree on some key operational tasks that will help us to achieve our strategic goals. Some notable outcomes were: establishing a club networking group to meet, discuss, share ideas and experience; and formalising pathway working groups for coaches, officials and high performance. We look forward to seeing some great outcomes from improved collaboration around the state!
VENUES: The Northern Suburbs Recreation Hub at Mowbray is up and running, with the NTVA jumping on board as a core tenant using the courts weekly. Feedback on the new facility from all users has been extremely positive and we look forward to hosting some state league rounds there. The new Glenorchy Sports Centre at Claremont College is under construction (go and check it out if you're in the area) and tenders are open for stadium management. Following some meetings with Building Tasmania attended by our board members, we're ecstatic to share that the design will include 6 permanently marked volleyball courts (1-2-2-1 configuration within 4 full-size basketball court spaces) with remote scoreboards and Stadia poles/nets (as seen at venues like Bendat Basketball Centre, Perth, and Coomera Indoor Sports Centre, Gold Coast). Competitions generally follow FIVB rules, but local comps might have some different rules. Check them closely so you and your team/club know what's expected. If you can't find the competition rules, ask your competition manager: they should be published for all members to see.
Volleyball Tasmania will be hosting a function to celebrate our fantastic volunteer network for the year and welcomes members, family and friends to attend:

A delegation of 30x Athletes, 8x Coaches and Support Staff headed to Adelaide in July to represent Tasmania at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships. U23 women, U23 men and U21 men all did us proud - an exciting final day was capped off with a win by the U21 men over South Australia, to finish 5th - and we hope you managed to catch their games streamed on Facebook. You'll find those matches and other historical content on our YouTube channel.
A delegation of 20x Athletes, 6x Coaches and Support Staff, 2x Referees and 1x Referee Coach are off to Perth (WA) to represent Tasmania at the Australian Youth Volleyball Championships held from Sunday 20 September to Friday 25 September 2026. The U16 girls and U18 boys teams are currently competing together in local leagues for additional match practice.
If you're keen to do some coaching in schools (mostly primary age, but some secondary) please get in touch. You will need to have a current WWVP card and possibly your own transport. Coaches are paid per session, plus mileage if travelling longer distances.
Our Junior Development Program (JDP) continues its busy calendar in 2026, in both Hobart and Launceston, and has again seen positive attendance levels at all ages.
Our JDP is open to new athletes all year round, so you can still join in Term 4. Feel free to come along and try it out or bring some friends along if you are already attending. Sessions are as follows:

We are planning to host another Junior Super League in Term 4 catered to students from Grade 7 to Grade 10.
Venue once again Moonah Sports Centre on Mondays from 4-6pm, possible start Monday 12 or 19 October 2026 (for 8 weeks)
You can sign up as a team or express interest as an individual and we will aim to allocate you to a team before the roster starts. An event will soon be available on the VTAS website.
Competitions are running across the North West Coast, Launceston and Hobart. This includes competitive leagues, social volleyball and 'come and try' sessions.
