2006 Tasmanian Masters Volleyball Championships

The second annual Tassie Masters event was completed in 2006!  [link: Masters homepage]

Divisions were offered in 30+ Men's, 40+ Men's and 30+ Women's. Files to download: COMPETITION RULES / DRAW

Competition date was Saturday 9th September - possibly the coldest Spring day we could have hoped for - but that didn't deter the volleyball faithful from attending Kingborough Sports Centre to support their teams!!!

All matches were played in marvellous "Masters" spirit and, despite a lack of appropriate sledging during some matches, the spectacle provided was one of high level skill and enjoyment. There were even two back-to-back victories, which will put further pressure on the teams to perform well again in 2007 and possibly to their rival teams to enter and throw down the gauntlet once more.

The women's award was presented to Geckos after winning two consecutive matches, with no need for a decider. It should be noted that the core of this team also represented Hobart in 2005 - so congratulations, girls, on a fantastic back-to-back!

Men 40+ Final: Boss def Assassins (2-0) 31-29 25-12

Obviously the epic first set took more out of the locals than their experienced opponents (with over 250 years of volleyball between them). Honourable mention goes to David Hunt, with the first ace of the match at 8:5 first set. Choker Awards for serving go to Tony, Steve F, Graeme and Rod. Pickup of the day (and the tournament), with set point against, by Tim Medwin off his foot to keep the rally alive, enabling Boss to win the point, the first set and, eventually, the match. Again, well done guys on the back-to-back wins.

Men 30+ Final: Hobart Tigers def The Adams Family (2-1) 18-25 25-21 15-5

They say "good guys come from behind", but this is the second time during the day that the Tigers crawled, scratched and clawed their way out of trouble - denying The Adams Family the fairytale tournament success with a solitary match win. Well-led by their captain, the Tigers cut down on errors to post a memorable victory. Congratulations one and all.

A high pass from Liz

"Did somebody call for a sub???"

Liz seems as happy to come off as Danni does going on...

The unstoppable front row

The unbeatable back row

It was either a line hit or some kind of Tai Chi?

The Assassins take a (well) earned break

The Glare of Death

Who was that masked spiker? Great hit down the middle

The crowd sets up for some filming

Danni about to crank another serve

...as only Pete can!

He can also hit a ball...

Geckos on the trail -

To victory!

Assassins ready to do what they do best

Steve F hits from outside against the Tigers

"Why won't anyone have a beer with me?"

It's those camera-shy Geckos...

Again!

Serious stuff in the 40+ division (notice Skip buttering up the ref...)

Okay - let's get on with the volleyball

Skip tries the tricky cross-court

The victorious Boss team (again)

The not-quite-so-victorious Assassins

Gilbert and Danni - photogenic, no?

Charlie: "Bribes? Yeah, sure!"

30+ final warm-up: Ibbott sets to Boscoe (sounds wrong, doesn't it?)

...and the game - Tigers await the serve

"What say you take a dive for a six pack?"

Now there's a determined look

Oh what wonders await them - Adams Family

Paul rolls one over the block

The score bench never looked so good

For goodness sake, give me more court! (Steve being greedy)

Must be the focus - looks like you need some sleep, Charlie!

Big Rob gets ready for a stuff block

Dave: [Too wide my @r$e, just hit the damn thing]

Look of concentration for the serve

Steve I cranks another winner

Trick shots too? Aren't we cocky?

First set goes to Adams Family. But it will be their last...

Clint tries to lighten the moment

Dave flies high

Who's serve is it then?

Big Carl puts up a block out wide

Clint spiking deep into court

Steve: [When it comes down, I'm gonna nail this block!]

Solid platform from Carl

Quick transition at the front

Having a cold one - you deserve it [1] [2]

Mick: [If I look hopeful they won't know it's going out...]

Tigers take the glory in men's 30+

...but the Adams Family still look like they're having fun! (looks like it's Rob's shout)
